Entry Title: Playa Hotels & Resorts

Playa Hotels & Resorts is a leading owner, operator and developer of all-inclusive resorts in prime beachfront locations in popular vacation destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. Playa owns and/or manages a total portfolio consisting of 22 resorts located in Mexico, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.

Playa was created with the intent of being an ownership company. Since then, Playa has transformed into a management company operating iconic global brands like Hyatt and Hilton. But our values and our belief that human capital is our greatest asset has never changed. Playa’s committed to contributing to the communities where associates live & work by giving back in numerous ways.

When Playa began managing resorts, each country was operating independently. The properties and associates were not benefiting from sharing ideas with colleagues around the world. We worked hard and collaborated as one team over the past few years to centralize processes and procedures, share best practices throughout the organization, manage our talent development, provide growth opportunities for our associates.

What began as a real estate company has transformed into the company we’ve always dreamed of being. Playa has developed values and philosophies true to who we are in every country we operate.

Since the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 not only led to loss, fear, sadness, and uncertainty, it was also accompanied by several challenges in HR. Our industry was brought to a standstill as the cases increased and travel was suspended. HR’s primary focus became maintaining genuine concern for employees and their families’ well-being while balancing the company’s needs and adapting to the changes we faced through the decline in business.

The spread of the virus forced us to transition all employees to work full time remotely. And while working remotely has its advantages, employees quickly felt isolated and missed the daily social interactions they would normally have while in the office. The HR department and leadership team scheduled weekly video calls which served to share information to all employees and interact with everyone through games and activities.

We created online learning and development opportunities and engagement activities for furloughed employees. This included a Facebook channel with free courses such as exercise, nutrition, positive news briefings, and yoga. This initiative included a Hope line where associates could speak with trained volunteers during their time of crisis.

One of the most impactful moments in 2020 was creating a GoFundMe account in honor of our first employee to die from COVID-19. This account helped support all our fellow employees who were greatly affected by the virus. Our Playa family raised over $63,000. The funds covered from medical treatments/bills, to basic needs such as food, rent/mortgage and were distributed to those who needed them most.

All companies have values and philosophies portraying who they want to be. When speaking to colleagues within the industry, the message is similar: their company has developed employment branding language that is attractive and appealing to candidates. However, Playa is different. Our employees can provide genuine examples of how we act and represent our values and philosophies every day through all levels of the organization from our President/CEO to housekeepers and waiters that serve our guests. You can hear our employees talking about how there is a mutual love between the company and associates in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lwgievOMbE&t=20s

One of our values is love and this sets us apart the most. During the most trying and difficult times in the history of Playa, the hospitality industry and the world, Playa was sure to put the needs of its associates first by providing food for their associates to put on the table, ensuring medical needs were met and always considering employees’ health and safety first.
