New World Development Company Limited was founded in Hong Kong in 1970. Despite the outbreak of global pandemic in early 2020, New World (NW) believed that every crisis presents an opportunity. Proactively responding to this massive disruption, we started thinking how we can turn crisis into opportunities. In echoing to our vision of CSV, a series of Human Resources initiatives were launched to create shared value with our employees and the community, including:

a) NW Group Job Fair
b) Caring to employees under COVID-19
c) Comprehensive learning & development initiatives with 3 key components:
• Mindset Reboot
• Crash Course on Coping with Change
• Question & Empowerment

(A) NW Group Job Fair

The largest jobs fair by the private sector since the start of the pandemic, created opportunities and hope to the community, especially for those who are unemployed

(B) Caring to employees under COVID-19

- Work-from-home policy and flexible work arrangements
- “Protective packs” (surgical masks, hand sanitizer and antiseptic wipe) were distributed to employees when facing shortage of anti-virus material in the market
- Set up NW Mask Factory to secure supply of mask to those in need and NW’s employees
- Lunch boxes for employees to maintain social distance

(C) Comprehensive learning & development initiatives

(a) Mindset Reboot
(1) e-Learning Journey 2020
Encourage colleagues to upskilling themselves during pandemic times

(2) Group Town Hall Webinar
• Senior Management motivated and led all colleagues to embrace the New Normal
• Ensure the same message be spread among all colleagues from NW Group

(3) Growth Webinars
Equip colleagues with skillset in innovating and transforming themselves
(b) Crash Course on Coping with Change
• Virtual Tour to NW Mask Factory to showcase how NW turn crises into opportunities
• Creativity Workshops to introduce ideation tools to brainstorm new ideas to cope with business challenges
(c) Question & Empowerment
(1) “I Can Chair”
- Encourages colleagues of all levels to take turns to chair meetings, speak up and ask questions
- Cultivates a bottom-up creative culture
(2) “Young Senior Management Committee”
Selected young talents sit in senior management meetings to experience the decision-making processes and propose ideas directly

(A) NW Group Job Fair
• The largest jobs fair by the private sector since the start of the pandemic
• Creating close to 1,000 new jobs, >10,000 candidates registered for the job fair, around 2,000 were invited to attend

(B) Caring to employees under COVID-19
• One of the first corporations to announce a work-from-home policy and flexible work arrangements
• NW’s own mask production factory show case how NW turn crisis into opportunity, creating shared value for NW, employees and stakeholders

(C) Comprehensive learning & development initiatives
• Demonstrated the Group would not limit resources for talent development even during a crisis. Instead, senior management showed their belief in motivating employees and supporting them to move from the “fear zone” to "growth zone”.
• Webinars/virtual training sessions removed the class size limitation . In the past nine months, over 50 courses were launched with over 57,000 participants, over 66,400 training hours were achieved
• These webinars were then converted into e-Learning modules for self-learn anytime, anywhere.
• “From Question to Innovation” campaign is a groundbreaking Initiative. It blends mass communication, online/offline learning, experiential learning and action learning together and successfully transformed the whole workforce with Growth Mindset within a short timeframe
• With the inspirational and practical skills training, our colleagues also developed a number of innovative business ideas during this period, including Mask-To-Go Dispenser, K11 MUSEA Shopping Festival, FTLife new sales strategies, etc. demonstrating our colleagues have learnt, improvised, and quickly found new solutions to new challenges.

(A) Care for employees

- Set up own mask production factory to secure supply of mask to those in need and NW’s employees
- Lunch boxes were provided to minimize close contact between staff and maintain social distance.
- Humansa’s nano-titanium photocatalyst coating service was used to prevent the possible spread of viruses and bacteria in common areas of the office building to ensure employees' peace of mind while working in the building
- Online Health Declaration Form facilitate the Company to keep informed of the employees’ situation to minimize the risk of virus spreading

(B) Create Jobs for Hong Kong People
- NW hosted the largest jobs fair by the private sector since the start of the pandemic
- Creating close to 1,000 new jobs, more than 10,000 candidates have registered for the job fair, around 2,000 of them were invited to attend
- Offered talents from all walks of life an opportunity to forge a new path of career
- Created opportunities and hope, especially for those who have been made unemployed or experiencing difficulties in searching for a job
