Carolyn Teoh is from IBM Malaysia. Her current focus area is AI Operations, as to simplify IT operations management and accelerate and automate problem resolution within Job recommendations offerings.

In addition to her current job, whenever there is an opportunity, Carolyn takes on stretch assignments to help her grow in her career and explore new skills. Prior to her current job, Carolyn was working on the Executive Succession and Development Operations in the HR Organization, supporting executive promotion, development and succession planning.

In 2020, Carolyn was given a stretch assignment as to help the Global Business Services HR team in creating a solution for consolidating data from nine different sources. And that consolidation would need to be done on a monthly basis. Think about merging the nine data sets monthly is a big effort. Prior to Carolyn taking that on, the data consolidation was done manually, using Excel vlookup function, with manual validation and such. In order to eliminate the effort to do more than 100 times of vlookups monthly, Carolyn had come out with a solution by utilizing her knowledge in IBM SPSS modeler.

Using her skills in IBM SPSS modeler, Carolyn developed several functions that allowed her importing data from different databases and then merging or appending that data, so that a direct analysis and reporting can be done eliminating an extensive manual effort. Most importantly, this process drastically reduced the chances of human error, resulting in time saving and leading to cost savings for the company.

Before implementing the SPSS solution, GBS HR team had to do more than a hundred of vlookups, and due to the complexity of the report, they could not avoid human errors, and could took up to two days to complete and validate the report. Another challenge the team was facing is about transition. It had been a big effort for them to train another person to handle the report due to Excel formulas skill is required and dealing with big piece of data and data accuracy was another challenge.

After implemented the SPSS solution, GBS HR team has now eliminated all the merging tasks. All they have to do is just to refresh the data files and follow by a few clicks to complete the data consolidation. The time spent on the report had reduced tremendously from 2 days (16 hours) to an hour. This saving is just for a single report. The consolidated data set allows a variety of different reports be run against it, multiplying the savings and reducing labor cost, improving work efficiency and saving time for the HR team enabling them to focus more on other valuable work. It is estimated that this solution is eliminating over $118K in annual costs.
