Name of Organization/Company: Deepwatch, Denver, CO USA
Category: Achievement in Managing a Remote Workforce

Entry Title: deepwatch keeps its 100% remote workforce (throughout 40 states) engaged

Since 2015, deepwatch has been working to advance SOC operations for customers ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies. It continues to innovate and fill voids in the cybersecurity market by delivering outstanding, highly tailored services as evidenced by its exceptional customer retention.

Around the world and across all industries, security operations centers (SOCs) are overwhelmed. deepwatch understands that security isn’t “one size fits all.” Their customers needed solutions with depth. From Day 1, they started deepwatch with a core focus on merging relentless service with advanced technology.

Today, deepwatch is one of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S., serving customers including Global 2000 companies as well as numerous small and mid-sized enterprises. They’re on a mission to advance the service of managed security.

Since the beginning of 2020, deepwatch has engaged its 100% remote workforce with many programs, including:

Wellness Bingo Contest – deepwatch designed a year-long program that allowed employees to create their own path to wellness and work/life balance. There was a grid of 25 different areas that employees could get points in, including mental health, community service, gratitude, and health-specific steps around doctor visits and wellness exams. It covered building out a home office that supports work productivity and happiness, such as putting a plant in the office. Employees could pick and choose where their interests lie and were eligible for prizes at the end of the contest.

Radical Candor Program – This deepwatch program encouraged employees to come to HR and candidly tell them any problem with the requirement of bringing forward an idea to meet the challenge. It was a collaborative approach to solving problems that created an atmosphere of camaraderie.

STEM-Inspired Community Service – deepwatch employees, during a Zoom call, built STEM activity kits for an organization called Rosie Riveters, which is dedicated to girls aged 4 to 14 to develop their STEM skills set and propel them into STEM educational and career opportunities.

All-Hands Company Kick-off Event – This virtual event kicked off deepwatch’s roadmap for the coming year but also acknowledged the friendships at deepwatch and encouraged quality time, even online, together. Giving back to the community was built into the event: Employees built art kits for children at the Shriners Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

The employee engagement achievements were unique and/or significant in the following ways:

The Wellness Bingo Contest allowed employees to create their own path to wellness and work/life balance. They could pick and choose where their interests lie, gain points for different activities, and win prizes. It was significant for deepwatch because it built trust between HR and the rest of its employees, which was important for the brand-new company. Doing so for a cybersecurity start-up was no easy task, as many IT professionals are usually leery of sharing personal information. The Wellness Bingo Contest allowed for a security-conscious alternative to typical wellness tracking programs.

The Radical Candor Program addressed the fact that there is a leadership shortage in the cybersecurity industry. It’s such a new, innovative, fast-moving space that there aren't people that have 10 to 15 years of leadership experience in it yet. This program encouraged employees to join committees and develop an internship program. Employees who participated gained leadership experience that would help prepare them for their next opportunity with the company.

The STEM-inspired Community Service enabled deepwatch to give back to the community virtually during a pandemic with little budget while supporting their deep mission of enhancing diversity and inclusion efforts for the cybersecurity industry. The STEM kits were delivered to schools, Girl Scout troops, churches, and other organizations that an employee had a relationship with. Employees were able to make an impact on their individual community, which is important since deepwatch employs people in 40 states.
