Rob Peabody is a genuinely nice guy who wants to make the world a better place. That’s exactly what he and his brother Joel set out to do when they started their company, VOMO, just three years ago.
VOMO, which stands for Volunteer Movement, is a radically simple volunteer engagement platform that helps organizations do good things with great people.
“We just want to serve those who serve others,” says Peabody.
On the wall of the office is written a lofty goal: 1 billion volunteer hours served on VOMO by March 27, 2029. Above that goal are the company’s core values: We Believe, We Work Hard, We’re Always Improving, We Lead By Serving, We Keep it Real, and We Have Fun.
That last value is definitely true. Staff meetings may start with a virtual game of Jeopardy or team- building activities using Oreos and balloons. Holidays always involve costumes and prizes. And last Fall, after the team worked hard to pull off a nationwide campaign, Peabody took the entire staff to the movies. When COVID- 19 hit and the team had to work through the weekend, Peabody sent gift cards and personal notes. He believes in VOMO and values his staff.
VOMO has been growing quickly. What started as a small, localized company working mainly with regional nonprofits has grown to include network partners and nationwide campaigns. VOMO is even being used now in 32 countries around the world.
Some of the major events of the past few months include:
~ A partnership with Dallas Morning News to power the FWD>DFW network that mobilizes volunteers across the Dallas- Fort Worth metroplex.
~ A nationwide service campaign in Fall 2019, in partnership with Sony and the “Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” movie
~ A partnership with EarthX and helping to mobilize volunteers for the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day
~ The re- vitalization of the “Be a Neighbor” campaign in order to assist with COVID- 19 relief.
~ A partnership with Stand Together to encourage 1,000 Acts of Kindness given across the Dallas- Fort Worth area and see $500,000 released for local families in need.
~ partnered with Craftwork Coffee to send bags of coffee and free mugs to first responders
~ In 2019 alone, VOMO made an impact of $7,400,395 through volunteering and 291,010 volunteer hours were served.
What VOMO has accomplished in three short years is nothing short of remarkable. Much of the success of the company is due to the fact that every member of the team believes in the mission. It is also because Rob and Joel Peabody are servant leaders who inspire others to follow.
"It's refreshing to wake up each day and love what you do" says Paige Dudek, VOMO Sales Manager. "It's great to work at a place where you enjoy the people you work with and know what you do is making a difference in the world."
Even being separated by COVID- 19 has not dampened the spirit of VOMO. The team stays connected through Zoom, Slack, email, calls, texts, and has managed to keep a very busy campaign running smoothly.
VOMO's development team has also been working hard to add additional features to the platform. Instead of being slowed down by COVID- 19, the team has actually managed to accelerate the work and reach goals ahead of deadlines. Every day more and more organizations are signing up to use the platform.
This past week, Amazon officially joined the Be A Neighbor Campaign to help close the #VolunteerGap in local communities around the nation. The tech and commerce giant has agreed to dive in with increased computational capacity to help scale and manage the surge in demand this campaign is receiving as it is now operating in 32 different countries around the world.
