Company: Insperity
Category: Employer of the Year - Business & Professional Services

Nomination Title: Insperity

More than 34 years ago, Insperity Chairman and CEO Paul J. Sarvadi envisioned making business owners’ lives easier by taking HR and administrative burdens off their plates. The company has grown from a two- person operation with three initial clients to a publicly traded organization serving more than 100,000 businesses with over 2 million employees. With corporate offices in Houston, Texas, Insperity operates in 85 locations throughout the United States.

Within the last 12 months, Insperity has opened 10 new offices in markets including, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, New Jersey, Providence, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego and Tampa, expanding its national footprint and number of corporate employees

Since its beginning, Insperity has recognized the vital role that people play in the success of the organization and designed a corporate culture that is second to none. Establishing a culture that people want to be a part of, expand and develop has been a key to the company’s success. Insperity hires people for their input, not only their output; and most employees view their role as a calling to help small and medium- sized businesses succeed so communities prosper.

With a culture that endorses work- life balance, family friendly values and an effective combination of individual and team contributions, it’s no surprise that Insperity is continually recognized as a great place to work at the regional and local levels, based largely on employee surveys. In Insperity’s hometown, the Houston Business Journal has named the company one of the Best Places to Work 18 times, and the Houston Chronicle has named Insperity one of the Top Workplaces on 10 occasions, which happens to be every year the program has been in existence. In 2019, Insperity ranked No. 1 on the Houston Business Journal list for the fifth year in a row, and No. 1 on the Houston Chronicle list, which is no small feat in the nation’s 4th largest city. In addition, Insperity has been ranked as one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas by Texas Monthly 15 times.

Since the company began participating in workplace recognition programs, it has appeared more than 175 times on the respective lists, reflecting its deep commitment to creating and fostering an exceptional work environment as a preferred employer. The rankings are not only a testament to Insperity’s corporate culture, but they also
demonstrate the industry- leading practices that it advocates to more than 100,000 businesses.

The above achievements were made possible, due in part, to the culture, generous benefits and perks Insperity offers to its employees.

lnsperity offers a very comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage; disability insurance; educational assistance; 401(k) program with a 100% match up to 6%; and a very generous PTO policy.

Insperity employees receive 12 hours of paid volunteer time each quarter so they can participate in company- sponsored volunteer events or with an organization of their choice. In 2019, 72% of employees volunteered nationwide resulting in more than 65,000 hours equivalent to more than $2 million in philanthropic action; $5.4 million was given in monetary and in- kind charitable donations.

Another benefit is The Insperity Fund – Created in 2004 to help employees who experience a time of crisis which warrants financial assistance due to unforeseen circumstances. Insperity provides corporate contributions to The Fund, but it is primarily sustained by employee donations. In 2019, 79 corporate employees received support from The Fund and employee donations totaled $231,000.

With regard to the COVID- 19 pandemic, Insperity quickly transitioned to a work-from home environment in order to protect its employees and their families. The company’s experience over the years with hurricanes and other disasters proved beneficial as the company was totally prepared to work remotely on a broad basis with 93% of employees working at home and only 7% of employees with the need to be at the workplace to accomplish their responsibilities. In addition, video messages from the CEO and daily Corporate HR email updates to employees containing important information regarding CDC guidelines, safety measures, remaining connected and maintaining open lines of communications further demonstrates Insperity’s commitment to taking care of their people. As the various states begin reopening, Insperity has taken a measured approach to returning to the workplace in an effort to ensure employees feel comfortable and safe, beginning on a voluntary basis in phase one.
