Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS) helps businesses build resilience into their production and recovery systems through a range of IT services. In 2017, the company made great strides in improving its employee experience in everything from; mentorship to leadership training to employee reviews. Sungard AS enhanced its onboarding process, expanded development opportunities and sought new ways to help its employees become more productive and proactive in growing their careers.
In order to integrate new employees as quickly as possible, the company’s Buddy Program pairs every new hire with an established employee who helps them immerse into the company culture.
In their first week of the Buddy Program, employees with a buddy rated their connectedness to the company with a score 18 percent higher than those without a buddy. At the 90 day mark, those with a buddy rated their engagement with the onboarding process at a score 26 percent higher than those without one.
After a year with the company, employees can take advantage of Sungard AS’ Global Mentoring Program, which helps them develop, grow in their role, perform to a higher level and get ready for the next steps in their career. This program is designed to offer individuals the opportunity to create a personal development plan and work with their assigned mentor to achieve their goals.
Both new and established employees have used Sungard AS’ Strengths-Based Development Program to improve their relationships with coworkers and managers and embrace their work. More than 1,300 employees have completed the program, which helps employees identify their greatest strengths and gain self-awareness to improve their organizational relationships.
In the last year, 82 percent of employees who have completed the program say they agree or strongly agree that knowing their strengths has improved their productivity—a nearly 14 percent jump over the previous year.
Some 59 percent said their managers use strengths in one-on-one meetings, team meetings or both, and 54 percent have received strengths-based feedback from their manager, a 2,600 percent increase year over year.
Sungard AS’ SCULPT program provides female employees opportunities to develop skills to advance not only their own careers, but also the company’s missions and goals. SCULPT was expanded from North America to EMEA last year, nearly doubling the scope of the program.
One of the biggest advances of the past year came in performance management. Sungard AS launched a new Performance Management Rating Tool (PMRT) to help managers and direct reports better evaluate the total contribution of employees by assessing both performance and behavior.
Rather than select an off-the-shelf performance management system, the Sungard AS team built its own from scratch to align with the company’s core values and how it measures performance. The result is a customized tool that fits the company culture.
In a survey taken after annual reviews, 73 percent of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the PMRT was beneficial for the conversations. Some 85 percent of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the PMRT improved the level of communication between managers and direct reports.
