Employees are a company’s best ambassadors and custodians of its brand. Perhaps the most critical lever that builds and nurtures this employee community is that company’s culture. In this context, a company’s Internal Communications function has a vital responsibility. AT UST Global, a leading Digital Services company providing powerful solutions for Global 1000 companies, Internal Communications (IC) as part of HR, carries out the corporate mission to ‘transform lives’, by inspiring its 17,000 employees to become global champions of this mission.

Since the inception of UST Global in 1999, the company has viewed IC as an indispensable instrument to communicate the corporate vision to all employees. Right from the beginning, the leadership established channels to ensure IC kept UST connected. And as UST grew rapidly over the years, expanding its employee base across Asia, US, Latin America, UK, Europe, Israel and Australia, IC naturally had the challenging, yet inspiring task of keeping UST connected.

With a team of five professionals based out of India, the function worked out an effective model of innovating and revitalizing the old channels of communication. In 2016, it also established new media, besides facilitating dialogues on internal social media.

A key IC instrument nearly as old as the company itself is the daily corporate newsletter – News@Noon. Run as a daily newspaper with various sections that bring news and views on the company’s business, innovation, events and employee achievements, the newsletter reinvented itself in 2016, launching several video series and disruptive design elements. UST is perhaps one of the few organizations to break the mold of weekly/monthly newsletters and run a daily newsletter to inspire, educate and motivate employees.

The series introduced in 2016 include videos on the company’s best innovators, the best technologists, top talents, etc. Through its collaborative partnership model, IC brought into limelight success stories and engagement activities from all corners of the world though the production and editorial activities were all happening in India. IC also introduced a mobile app for the newsletter, ensuring better reach and news on the go for all.

What better way can there be to collaborate than to leverage the power of social media platforms?

UST was one of the 12 companies worldwide to adopt Workplace by Facebook in 2016. A notable achievement was a live session that IC facilitated between the Chief People Officer and the employees. What started out as a one-hour session extended to two hours, becoming a highly interactive and transparent dialogue.

We also launched the UST Podcast Center in 2016, programing video and audio podcasts around technology, innovation, management and leadership. The inaugural podcast on Machine Learning alone received close to 9000 views in one week.

2016 was also a great year to start producing newsletters for UST’s customers. A monthly newsletter for a major retail brand from the UK was developed based on market research. News included retail trends, news from their competition and relevant UST news.

In line with UST Global’s belief in engaging dialogues with its customers on industry-relevant trends and subjects, IC relaunched a monthly virtual webinar, inviting world-class subject matter experts from the industry and senior customer executives who could talk on the latest technology trends, futuristic concepts and domains.

IC is also responsible for org-wide corporate campaigns. What stands out is the one that was a run up to UST’s first ever Developer Conference. The campaign lasted a month and included videos from the top management and technologists, roadshows. There was even a rock concert as part of the internal launch activities.

2016 was a year of great and new connections. IC continues to grow, in search of new tools and mechanisms to ensure employee connect at all times.
