Entry Title: Genentech

Employer of the Year Essay:

Founded 41 years ago, Genentech is a leading biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and commercializes medicines to treat patients with serious or life-threatening medical conditions. A member of the Roche Group, Genentech has headquarters in South San Francisco, California.

Genentech is dedicated to creating a great place for the organization’s 15,000+ employees to do their best work.

In a recent interview, Nancy Vitale, senior vice president of Human Resources stated that a secret to Genentech’s success is its culture. Genentech is dedicated to creating a connected, inspiring culture for their employees who come to work every day to deliver on their mission of helping people who suffer from serious diseases. Genentech knows that success as an organization is tied directly to having engaged and resilient employees.

Genentech’s HR group handles Compensation and Benefits; Employee Relations; Learning and Organization Development; Diversity, Inclusion and Innovation; as well as Staffing. The teams collaborate to attract and develop a diverse community and foster a productive environment, creating a great place to work.

Important issues for Genentech’s HR team include ensuring a focus on diversity and inclusion to spur innovation, nurturing and evolving the company culture, and working to attract and retain talented people in the increasingly competitive Bay Area market.

The perks and programs Genentech employees enjoy include:
-Competitive compensation and benefits.
-Paid sabbaticals every six years.
-Flexible work options.
-Free or supplemented transportation to and from work.
-Generous parental leave policies with company supported daycare and elder care.
-Generous health and retirement benefits.
-On site amenities including a health center, gym, dentist, and concierge.

In the Fall of 2016, Genentech opened a 68,000-square-foot Campus Community Center.

Centrally located on its South San Francisco campus, steps away from the largest office buildings and a short walk from the labs and production facilities, the center is focused on four pillars of sustainability, well-being, community and innovation. Genentech took the time to ask its employees what they wanted before building the new center. Drawn from their wish lists, additional features include a juice bar, lounge, pool table, bike storage room, physical medicine, multisport court and outdoor exercise programming.

Besides competitive salaries and working conditions that give employees space for personal development, Genentech makes sure people feel close to the company’s mission and purpose by appreciating and celebrating everyday efforts, key successes and company and employee milestones as well as the failures that are part of working in a high-risk industry.

Genentech is also leading innovative efforts to increase diversity and inclusion. Formal programs support professional development for under-represented groups and the company hosts several events a year to bring diverse employee groups together on campus.

People at Genentech are passionate about applying their skills, time and resources to positively impact patients, the scientific community and the places where they live and work. They do this year round through their corporate charitable giving, employee volunteer programs and the work of the Genentech Foundation. Last year Genentech and the Genentech Foundation donated ~$42 million to local and national non-profits, and its Futurelab program – a partnership with South San Francisco schools - provides students K-12 wtih the opportunity to get excited about science while also inspiring them to pursue careers in STEM-related fields.

Genentech offers an environment where employees can do their best work and have a significant impact on people’s lives. It’s a place where scientific discovery and development thrives – they invest approximately $10 billion every year in R&D and have more breakthrough therapy designations from the FDA than any other company – and where valuing diversity and inclusion results in better ideas, more fruitful collaboration and a vibrant culture. It’s also a fantastic place to build a career and benefit from global perspectives and opportunities as part of the Roche Group.
