Nomination Category: Employer of the Year - Diversified Services
Employer of the Year Essay:
Cambridge Consultants has been centre founding father of the internationally-renowned Cambridge technology cluster in the UK for 57 years. The company is the development partner of choice for innovative start-ups through to blue-chip organizations operating in the consumer, digital services, defense & security, industrial, medical technology, oil & gas and wireless communication sectors. It has developed a string of world firsts – ranging from the world’s first wireless implanted pacing system to the ground-to-air radio system controlling air traffic over the majority of the planet.
In addition to solving problems for clients, Cambridge Consultants funds internal projects that have become spin-off companies in their own right. Evonetix, a breakthrough producer of DNA, is the latest of more than 20 spin-outs, including three of Cambridge’s 15 billion-dollar firms – CSR, Xaar and Domino Printing Sciences.
Cambridge Consultants has doubled in size over the last four years and now has a global workforce of 750. This includes the tripling of its US East Coast presence in Boston and the acquisition of the140-strong Synapse product development business on the West Coast of the US. It has also opened sales offices in Singapore and Tokyo.
By 2019, more than £50 million will have been invested in advancing the firm’s world-class facilities at its Cambridge Science Park headquarters in the UK.
In 2017, the company won an International Trade award for growth in overseas markets.
Overseas sales grew by 74% since 2012 and now accounts for around two-thirds of the firm’s business.
Culture of Innovation
Cambridge Consultants has created a world class collaborative working environment with innovation strategy, design, testing, and production all in one place.
Employees receive free lunches and refreshments, as well as a comprehensive healthcare package and performance-related bonuses – and more than half a million pounds a year is invested in training. An active social club gives the company a 'family feel', and it has a culture of care, support and teamwork.
To address the growing skills gap, Cambridge Consultants sponsors a wealth of apprenticeship and trainee programs to fill its vacancies. Its Tech Scholar Program for High School graduates serves as a fantastic recruitment tool. Tech Scholars join straight out of school and spend a year working before starting at university. During their studies they receive financial support from the company and return each summer for additional paid work.
For the fourth year in a row, Cambridge Consultants was listed in the Sunday Times Best 100 mid-sized companies to work for. “Our staff is the key to our success – and a crucial part of what makes us the employer of choice for truly talented people,” said Alan Richardson, CEO. “Working alongside great colleagues on a variety of difficult challenges is what inspires our people to produce world-class innovation for our clients. It’s great to see their job satisfaction reflected in these results.”
Approximately 10 percent of the company is dedicated to corporate development programs, or employee-initiated ideas that are funded internally and lead by the innovators.
And as the company continues to grow, so does their sense of community. The company’s charity of the year, chosen by the staff, benefits from a variety of fundraising efforts, matched pound for pound by the company.
“Our ambitious expansion plans have seen us reach a global workforce of 750 – but, at the same time, we have made it a priority to preserve our unique working culture. We aim to be the platform for the ambitions of our staff – by providing an environment in which they can develop and reach their full potential.” said Richardson. The company expects to reach 1,000 employees and double its revenues again by 2020.
